Who We Are
Founded in 2007 by industrial designer Adriaan Hugo and graphic designer Katy Taplin, Dokter and Misses is a Johannesburg-based multi-disciplinary design studio. Born from a shared vision of functional artistry, we make furniture, lighting, and objects that challenge conventions and reinterpret everyday forms.
Each piece is a testament to our belief that design should be both beautiful and practical—objects that live with you and make a statement.
Inspired by the City
Johannesburg is in our DNA. The energy, architecture, and unexpected juxtapositions of the city fuel our creative process. Our work embraces both the chaos and rhythm of urban life, translating it into striking silhouettes and graphic compositions that reject the mundane.
Radical Forms, Functional Design
Our work straddles the line between art and function, experimenting with material, shape, and colour to create pieces that are as practical as they are beautiful and bold.
A Distinctly African Aesthetic
Our design language is deeply rooted in African modernism, drawing from a diverse tapestry of influences, from the geometry of Basotho patterns to monolithic Brutalist architecture and hand painted signage. This synthesis of global and local aesthetics produces pieces that are both timeless and unmistakably contemporary.
